Backstage
An AI-powered operations chat for the agent you're building — ask it questions or tell it what to change.
What Backstage is
Backstage is the first tab you land on when you open an agent. It's a chat with a meta-assistant whose job is managing this specific agent's configuration — separate from the agent's own customer-facing chat, which lives in the Playground and on your live channels. Think of it as talking to the person running the agent, not the agent itself.
Each Backstage conversation is scoped to one agent and persisted like any other chat: closing the tab and coming back later restores your last conversation, and the ↺ button in the header starts a fresh one.
What it can actually do
Backstage uses real tool-calling against a small, fixed set of tools — it isn't just answering from a general prompt. Every tool call is scoped to your tenant and this agent's id, the same isolation used everywhere else in the app. Today it can:
- Read the agent's overview — name, model, temperature, current instructions, and which channels are enabled.
- List data sources — every file, website, text snippet, and Q&A entry, with status and chunk counts.
- Report credit usage — tokens used this period against the configured limit, if any.
- Report rate-limit settings — the widget's messages-per-window configuration.
- Rewrite the agent's instructions — only when you explicitly ask it to change, rewrite, or improve them. It replaces the saved system prompt directly; the change shows up immediately on the Instructions tab and is versioned there like any other edit.
Anything outside that list — adding a data source, creating an action, changing channel settings — Backstage will tell you to do from the relevant tab rather than pretending to have done it. The 🔌 Controllers button in the header jumps straight to Integrations if you need to connect something it referenced.
Suggested prompts
The empty state offers a few starting points, and you can always type your own:
- "Audit my agent's configuration for improvements"
- "How are my credits being used this month?"
- "Review and improve my agent's instructions"
- "What can you help me with?"
What Backstage is not
The composer's attachment (📎) and voice (🎙) buttons are visibly disabled here — Backstage is a text-only configuration chat, not the customer-facing widget, and attachments/voice input aren't wired into this particular conversation. If you want to test what a real visitor experiences, use the Playground instead.
